From what l hear the meeting of the full B&NES Council today – Thursday, September the 10th – promises to be both lively and passionate.

Councillors may face one of the issues for discussion on the doorstep on the Guildhall as they arrive with some people demonstrating support for the Council’s involvement in finding homes in the area for Syrian refugees.

Once in the Council Chamber, the Liberal Democrat Group are lying in wait with a motion expressing concerns about the latest developments regarding the granting of licences for fracking – exploiting shale gases by injecting fluids into the underlying rock strata to force it out.

They are particularly concerned to ensure that nothing is allowed to affect either the spa thermal waters or the drinking water stored in the Chew Valley reservoirs.

They want their local MP to express their concerns and also want an update on exactly what powers of control they have – as a Council – over the granting of any licence for fracking in the area.

Next in line are the Green group with a motion calling on B&NES to deal with the problem of gulls – not by culling the birds – but by limiting the availability of food to them.
